Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of chaos and just resigns itself to fate, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a sigh.
In the end, you are here left with a sense of bewilderment. You start ruminating about the meaning of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, ravaging entire towns in its wake. Buildings shattered like sandcastles, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were trapped beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to grapple a future forever changed.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedon and landed all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I arrived. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
